ESSAY: A Letter of Complaint

Have you ever experienced a situation when you bought a thing from a shop and when you got home, you discovered that something was wrong with the thing you bought. You returned to the shop for a replacement but were asked to write a letter of complaint to the company. Do you know how to write the letter? 

When writing a letter of complaint, you should remember that it is a formal letter and has its own format.

Let's do some basic revision on the format.

FORMAL LETTER LAYOUT:

1) Writer's name and address at the top LEFT hand corner.
2) Draw a line below the address.
3) Recipient's name/ designation and address.
4) Date at the RIGHT hand side and on the same line as the last line of the receiver's address.
5) Salutation for example: "Dear Sir,"
6) Title/ Subject for example: Defective Microwave
7) First paragraph: NOT numbered.  For this INTRODUCTION part, write the   purpose of writing letter. Includes the point about the model of the purchase.
8) Other paragraphs are numbered and indented. For example:

•     Second paragraph: Date of the purchase and elaboration.

•     Third paragraph: Problem with the purchase and elaboration.

•     Fourth paragraph: A request for refund or replacement and elaboration.

9) Concluding paragraph for example:  "I hope your company will look into this matter as soon as possible."
10) Include a complimentary close for example: "Yours faithfully,"
11) Signature at the LEFT hand side
12) Name in BLOCK letters.

Now, let's check some examples of letter of complaint. 
Please aware that there are some differences in the format of the letters shown below.

The Simple Past and The Past Progressive

The Simple Past

The Simple Past is used to talk about an activity or situation that began and ended at a particular time in the past. 
Ex: yesterday, last night, two days ago, in 1998 and etc.

Ex in sentences: 
a) Amanda walked to library yesterday.

b) He slept for six hours last night.

The Past Progressive

The Past Progressive expresses an activity that was in progress (was happening) at a point of time in the past.

FORM: was/were + -ing.

Ex: at 6.10 or at the time of another action (ex: when Azwan came).

Ex in sentences: 

a) I sat down at the dinner table at 6.00 P.M. yesterday. Azwan came to my house at 6.10 P.M. I was eating dinner when Azwan came.

Explanation: eating was in progress at 6.10 P.M; eating was in progress when Azwan came.

b) I went to bed at 10.00 P.M. The phone rang at 11.00 P.M. I was sleeping when the phone rang.

This song describes bullies. Taylor Swift wrote the lyrics to express her feelings when she was hurt by someone. Look at these words below? What's your opinion on these words??

Can you guess the answer? 

Actually, all the words above give us an apt description of a bully.

Then, look at this phrase:

What's your views about the phrase?

Answer: She is expressing on how she is standing up for herself and refusing to be bullied.

Interjections??? What's that?

Idioms

Hi!! Let us see how we can use idioms to describe emotions. Today I will share with all of you 3 interesting idioms. 

1) weep with joy: cry out of happiness.

Ex: When Mimi saw the cat was badly bruised but alive, he wept with joy. 


2) quaking in one's boots: when someone is extremely scared.

Ex: Hishamoto was quaking in his boots when he saw his village flattened by the tsunami and dead bodies washed-up amidst the debris.
 
3) rooted to the spot: unable to move because of fear.

Lina and her son stood rooted to the spot as they saw a mighty wall of water approaching them. 

Perfect Two ^_^

There are some metaphors that we can learn from this video. A metaphor can be defined as a figure of speech comparing two things but without using the words "like" or "as".

For instance: You're the apple to my pie,

You're the straw to my berry, 
You're the smoke to my high and many more.

Anti-Smoking Campaign

I found these interesting video clips when I was surfing the Internet this morning. The message of this clips are don't smoke as smoking will bring you many harms. It will ruin your body system and slowly bring you to death for the long term effect. 

Remember that every year, hundreds of thousands of people around the world would die from many diseases caused by this habit for instance, lung cancer, strokes and heart diseases. So, stay away from this smoking habit and let's lead a healthy lifestyle.
